IT Security: Are you really secured?
IT security is very important to organizations nowadays. The increasing risk of data breaches has been an issue for a few years now, and a lot of information has been leaked to hackers. Facebook, Yahoo, Adobe, and other big companies have been involved in data breaches. This has also been an issue in the Philippines, involving some major banks and even the Commission on Elections has been compromised. Due to these events, investment in IT security is a must, especially when it involves sensitive information.
Now it leaves us with the question, how
will we acquire IT security? Do we create it, or do we outsource it? How much
are we going to spend on creating one if we create our own IT security? Will it
be effective against unforeseeable attacks and breaches? Another option we have
is to outsource our IT security.
Outsourcing IT security has its benefits
and consequences. One of the benefits is that outsourced IT security is
reliable and effective in defending against external data breaches and hackers.
Companies providing IT security boast about their ability to protect users in
case of an attack, viruses, or possible data breachers. Another benefit is that
it costs less than creating your own IT security system. Paying for these
services can ease the company's expenses for creating and developing its own IT
security system. Research and development costs, maintenance costs, and
upgrading costs make up the expenses of developing your own IT security system.
These expenses can be lessened if you outsource the IT security system to
renowned IT security companies by paying a subscription fee. Its benefits,
however, are accompanied by its drawbacks. One big consequence is the
reliability of the company that provides the IT security services. If they have
the means to protect you, it simply means they have access to your sensitive
data. In order to combat these, finding a reliable outsourcing company that has
a good track record can be beneficial to the organization. Another option is to
bind the outsourcing company to a contract in the event of a data breach
involving the outsourcing company. It is much easier and less expensive to
outsource an IT security system than to produce one. On top of that, the
reliability and time it takes to develop an IT security system is
disadvantageous to the organization. Weighing the benefits and the consequences
of outsourcing IT security systems and developing one, it is better that an
organization outsource its IT security system.
